Controversy Over Chhaava: Will the Director’s Apology Change Minds?

Controversy Over Chhaava: The film ‘Chhaava’ continues to rock the box office. This film starring Vicky Kaushal shows the valor and sacrifice of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. But amid the success of the film, the descendants of Ganoji and Kanhoji Shirke have objected to it. After this, the film director Laxman Uttekar clarified this issue and apologized. Let’s look at historical inaccuracy in Chhaava. Will the Director’s Apology Suffice?

Allegations on Vicky’s film ‘Chhava’

The descendants of Ganoji and Kanhoji Shirke had demanded an apology from the filmmakers. They alleged that both these historical persons have been presented in a negative way in the film, whereas they were loyal soldiers of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Ganoji and Kanhoji’s descendant Bhushan Shirke had sought clarification from Laxman Uttekar on this and requested him to apologize publicly.

Laxman Uttekar apologized

Laxman Uttekar responded to these allegations and clarified his position by apologizing to Bhushan Shirke. He said that the surnames of Ganoji and Kanhoji have not been mentioned in the film and neither has any name of their village been taken. Uttekar said, ‘Our aim was not to hurt the sentiments of any person or family. If this film has hurt anyone, then I apologize.’

Uttekar told Bhushan Shirke through a phone call, ‘I saw your press conference and message. I apologize to you and want to clarify this whole matter. We have only mentioned the names of Ganoji and Kanhoji, without mentioning their surnames. Our intention was not to hurt the sentiments of the Shirke family.’

Shirke family reacted

Laxmikant Raje Shirke, who is the 13th descendant of Ganoji and Kanhoji, has announced to take legal action against the film. He said, ‘We have sent a notice to the director of the film and if our descendants are not portrayed correctly, we will file a defamation case of Rs 100 crore.’

Apart from this, the Shirke family has also filed a complaint with the Pune Police Commissioner and demanded legal action against the Chhaava filmmakers. The Shirke family has also demanded changes in the facts made in the film. They are also warning that if their objections are not addressed, they will protest on a large scale in Maharashtra.
