The state government has issued warnings saying that if you eat idlis, you may get cancer. However, officials have concluded that this cancer is not due to idlis, but to the way they are prepared. On this ocassion, the government has issued key orders to all the hotels in the state. These orders have been given with key changes in the method of preparing idlis. So how does idlis cause cancer? Let’s see what orders the state government has actually issued in this story.


Usually, many people like to eat idli for breakfast. Idli is a light food and is eaten because it is digested quickly. Moreover, oil is also used in very less quantity, so people prefer eating idli. However, now the latest findings that there is a risk of cancer due to such idli, are causing great concern. In this context, it has become a sensation when Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao stated that the use of plastic covers while cooking idli has caused cancer in the body.

How idlis causes cancer?

However, during inspections conducted in several hotels across the state of Karnataka, the Karnataka Food Security Department officials found that polythene cover sheets are being used to cook idli, Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao revealed. However, due to cooking idli in polythene covers like this, the carcinogenic substances in that plastic can enter the human body through the idli and cause cancer, he said. In this context, the Karnataka government has issued orders completely banning the use of plastic in the preparation of idlis in all hotels in the state. It has been found that polythene sheets are being used in the preparation of idlis in 52 hotels in Karnataka.


Karnataka Health Department officials revealed that they have tested nearly 250 types of idli samples from across the state. The minister revealed that they have confirmed that idlis are being prepared using plastic covers instead of the cloth that is usually used to make them. Health department officials said that they have collected 251 samples from across the state and sent them for testing. They said that earlier, cloth was used to cook idlis, but now it has been found that some people are using plastic covers instead of that cloth. He said that out of 251 samples tested, 52 samples were found to contain plastic and the health department will soon issue official orders to ensure that this does not happen. The minister also warned that action will be taken against those who violate the rules.
