Hyderabad Hidden Gem: This is a historical city that is known for its grand buildings and rich past. Famous buildings like Charminar and Golconda Fort attract tourists from all over the world. But this city also has some historical heritages which are less known. One of these is the ‘Asmangarh Palace’ located in Malakpet, which once belonged to the Paigah family of Hyderabad state.
According to historian Shafiqur Rahman, this palace was situated on a hill, from which a spectacular view of the forests spread all around was visible. The Nizam and his courtiers used to come to these forests for hunting. This palace was designed by former Prime Minister of Hyderabad Sir Asman Jah himself in 1885. It was his holiday spot, but later, the Nizam liked it so much that Sir Asman Jah gifted it to him.
The architecture of the palace is based on the Gothic style and is inspired by European palaces. Some of its special features include Granite turrets and arched windows, which give it a distinct identity. It is a small but grand building, which technically does not qualify as a palace, but its style makes it special. The entrance has painted arches adorned with slender Corinthian columns, which make it attractive.
According to some local beliefs, there is a tunnel in the basement of the palace. Which went directly to the Golconda Fort. However, no one has seen this tunnel till now, and there is no clear mention of it in historical documents as well. Therefore it still remains a mystery. Asmangarh Palace may be less popular today, but its history and architecture make it one of the overlooked but important heritages of Hyderabad.
Asmangarh Palace, located in Hyderabad, Telangana, currently serves as a branch of St. Joseph’s Public School. The historic palace was built in 1885 by Sir Asman Jah. It has had various uses over the years, including being a museum and an orphanage. Today, it continues to function as an educational institution, with a new four-storied building added to the original structure by the school authorities.
