Ram Gopal Varma, often referred to as RGV is an Indian film director, screenwriter and producer. Known for his works in Telugu and hindi cinema, RGV has directed films across several genres, including docudrama.
Renowned for his unconventional approach to cinema, Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) has often been a polarizing figure in the Indian film industry. On International Women’s Day in 2017, he stirred significant controversy with a series of tweets that many perceived as misogynistic and insensitive. Now again RGV has come up with a new tweet on Women’s Day 2025.
I can live without my existence , but i can’t live without women’s existence ..HAPPY WOMEN’S DAY🙏🙏🙏
— Ram Gopal Varma (@RGVzoomin) March 8, 2025
On March 8, 2017, RGV took to Twitter to express his views on Women’s Day and one of his most contentious tweets read: “I wish all the women in the world give men as much happiness as Sunny Leone gives.”
This remark was widely criticized for objectifying women and dismiss the significance of the day dedicated to honoring women’s achievements and promoting gender equality, also
in another tweet, he questioned the necessity of Women’s Day by implying that men already celebrate women daily: “Women’s day should be called #MensDay because men celebrate women much more than women celebrate women.”
Such statements were seen as sabotaging the challenges women face and the ongoing struggle for equal rights. Thus, the backlash was swift and widespread.
Social media platforms buzzed with criticism, with many accusing RGV of implementing sexist stereotypes and failing to recognize the importance of advocating for women’s rights. Some called for apologies and others debated the broader implications of his comments on societal attitudes toward women.
This incident wasn’t an isolated one in RGV’s career but he also has a history of making provocative statements that challenge societal norms and often ignite debates. While some appreciate his candidness and willingness to defy conventions, others believe his remarks cross the line into insensitivity.
