Haleem Prices in Hyderabad: A steady rise?

Haleem Prices in Hyderabad: A steady rise?

Haleem is a popular , thick, and hearty stew. The dish which was actually a Middle East origin is now been widely enjoyed in South Asia, particularly in India and Pakistan.

Hyderabadi Haleem is known for its distinct flavor and is considered a signature dish of the city, often marketed as a “Rs 100-crore brand name”.

Now, as it is the month of Ramadan, the demand for the dish is comparatively higher than ever. But as we look through the price of Haleem in Hyderabad, the price range seems to be a bit over the board.

Haleem is expensive in Hyderabad primarily because of the high cost of its key ingredients, like mutton, ghee, wheat, and spices, which is comparatively more expensive during the month of Ramadan when the demand for this dish increases. The ‘Demand and Supply’ theory well executed.

Another potential reason why this dish is expensive right now, could be possibly because of the recent bird flu break out, which is making people prefer mutton to chicken. Mutton haleem is obviously expensive than the chicken one, considering the mutton price.

Increase in price?

Last year, one plate of this dish which costed rs. 280, has now rose to rs. 300.
“Last year we sold haleem for ₹280. This year there is a surge in demand for meat as bird flu has affected the sale of chicken meat. Wedding caterers are avoiding chicken, restaurants are reporting a drop in the sale of chicken dishes. This has impacted meat prices and forced us to raise prices,” says M. A. Majeed of Pista House.
Since he first began serving haleem at ₹18 in 1997, Mr. Majeed has witnessed both the dish’s popularity and price increase, earning it a GI tag. There are presently 52 Pista House locations across the city.
