Space exploration has fascinated humanity for centuries, pushing the boundaries of science and technology while expanding our understanding of the universe. However, as astronauts venture beyond Earth’s atmosphere, the profound effects of space on the human body become increasingly evident. Living and working in the microgravity environment of space presents unique challenges, impacting everything from bone density to cognitive function. While the excitement of space missions captures our imagination, it’s essential to consider the side effects that astronauts experience during their time in orbit. Let’s now look a the side effects of physical health side effects on humans.
Butch Wilmore and astronaut Sunita Williams will make their way back to Earth. She spent nine months and thirteen days in space. The first female astronaut was Valentina Tereshkova. In 1963, she made her first trip to space. Since then, 99 women have traveled to space on various missions. There are lot of side effects after the space stay.
The main side effects of space stay are:
1. Muscle and Bone Mass Reduction
2. Baby Feet Issue
3. Radiation Effect
4. Vision Power Loss
1. Muscle and Bone Mass Reduction
According to the survey, Astronauts who spend 2 weeks in space are likely to fall in muscle mass by around 20%. Following to this if he or she stays more than 3 to 6 months around 30% of the muscle mass gets reduced.
This reduction in Muscle mass and Bone mass in the body will result in loss of strength. There is a risk of facing lot of fractures and the muscles tend to not maintain posture. According to a study by the experts after 4 years of return, the bone mass comes back to normal. This major effect on the body will reduce lots of strength and get demineralized.
2. Baby Feet Issue
There were a lot of instances where astronauts lacked their strength. There is an issue called “Baby feet” in which the person’s soles get soft due to lack of friction. This problem sounds normal but it will end up in a lot of pain while walking until the soles get hard again. the recovery might take weeks or sometimes months.

3. Radiation Effect
There is a high chance that astronauts face cancer or other rare cancers after coming back from space. This mainly happens because of the exposure to radiation in the space. In the earth’s atmosphere with the help of a magnetic field the radiation power is not as much as in space. In space, this protection is not there in which the astronauts end up getting exposed to high levels of radiation. This radiation effects on them will mainly cause cancer and rare cancer diseases.
4. Vision Power Loss
Usually, on the earth, gravity helps the blood to flow downwards easily towards the heart. But, in space blood gets stored in the brain more than it should, this will slowly flow back near the eyes and optical nerves. This excess amount of blood near the eyes will affect the vision and structural body near the eyes.
