What is Anemia?

Dr. Sonia Rawat explains that anemia occurs when there is a lack of hemoglobin or red blood cells in the blood. Hemoglobin is a protein in the blood that carries oxygen from the lungs to different parts of the body. When hemoglobin levels are low, the body does not get enough oxygen that leads to symptoms like:

– Tiredness and weakness
– Headaches
– Pale or yellowish skin

Causes of Anemia

Anemia can happen due to several reasons which includes:

– Certain diseases that cause excessive bleeding
– Poor nutrition during pregnancy

Doctors say that in women, menstrual bleeding is a major cause of anemia. Every month women lose blood which reduces iron levels in the body. If they do not get enough iron through food they may develop anemia.

– Eggs and meat (for non-vegetarians)

Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron better. Foods rich in vitamin C include:

– Lemon
– Orange

– Strawberries
