Kunal Kamra Row, What Exactly Happened – Kunal Kamra, popular standup comedian and political satirist, is once again in the news for his comments on Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, BJP, and Shiv Sena. His recent performance at Mumbai’s Habitat created so much buzz on social media. Shivsena (Eknath Shinde) supporters vandalized the venue and creaked enough ruckus. They threatened Kamra that he would not freely move in India. They went to the police station and filed a complaint against Kunal Kamra. The Khar police lodged an FIR on the comedian. The police arrested Shiv Sena Yuva Sena General Secretary Rahool Kanal and 11 others.
It all started when Kamra took a dig against Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde in a show last month. Although he didn’t take the name, he called Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde a “traitor,” which kindled substantial backlash. It was easy to guess who he was referring to as Shinde rebelled against the Shiv Sena party in 2022, dividing it and joining forces with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to become Chief Minister. Many considered it as a betrayal of his original party. Angered by the comments, Shiv Sena workers yesterday created a ruckus at Mumbai’s Habitat studio. Visuals displayed Sena workers damaging the property like chairs, cameras, lights, and speakers at the studio.
Speaking on the issue, Devendra Fadnavis said, “It is a serious issue. None of us are against freedom of speech. We support satire or even political satire and we do not paint it differently. We believe in freedom of expression. But if it is going to anarchy, we won’t accept it. Kamra in the past has targeted PM, CJI, Judges or judiciary. This person likes to create controversy to gain publicity. In this, he targeted former CM Eknath Shinde and tried to make low-level comedy. The people of Maharashtra in the 2024 polls decided who is Gaddar and Khuddar. The people decided who belonged to the ideology of Balasaheb Thackeray. Is he bigger than the people of Maharashtra?
When asked about her response, TMC MP Jaya Bachchan said, “If such steps are being taken on saying something then where is freedom of speech? There is only freedom of action when there’s hooliganism and women are raped, where else? When Shiv Sena (referring to Shinde faction) left their original party was that not an insult to Balasaheb Thackeray?”
People took to Social media to express their opinions. While some supported the artist for free speech, some questioned his political loyalty and comedic boundaries.
