Hyderabad Metro: Officials say that Hyderabad Metro Rail is incurring a loss of Rs. 1.5 crore per day. Due to this, the Metro Rail Corporation has appealed to the government to increase ticket prices. However, it is learned that the state government is not ready to burden the passengers. It is learned that the government has already made it clear that despite incurring losses, there is no plan to increase prices.
Currently, metro trains are running on three corridors. There is a lot of passenger traffic on almost all routes. However, despite the popularity of the metro, the operating company is not spared from losses. According to the details given by the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) officials, the metro is losing Rs. 1.5 crore every day. While loans were taken from international banks for the construction of the project, Metro officials say that they are not even able to pay the interest on those loans.
According to the details given by the metro sources, 5.10 lakh passengers travel in the metro trains every day. Before Corona, it used to earn more than Rs. 80 lakh per day. But, the metro has suffered huge losses due to the lockdown. Although there has been some improvement after the lockdown was lifted, the losses are not decreasing. Officials say that the losses are due to the lack of expected passengers and increased operating costs. It is said that the number of women traveling in the metro has decreased since women were given free travel in RTC buses. The metro is incurring losses due to this reason as well.
Metro officials believe that some of the losses can be compensated by increasing ticket prices. For this, they want to seek permission from the central government through the state government. But it seems that the state government is not ready to put much burden on the people. The state government is currently focused on the construction of the second phase of the Metro. Now, if they talk to the center about increasing ticket prices, they feel that the original goal is likely to be damaged.
Currently, the minimum ticket price of the Metro is Rs. 10 and the maximum ticket price is Rs. 60. If the prices are increased, there is a chance that the minimum ticket price will be Rs. 20 and the maximum price will be Rs. 80. However, despite this proposal for the last two years, the prices have not increased. If the ticket prices increase, it will only be an additional burden on the common man.
