Also he attended TV9’s What India Thinks Today Summit 2025. Speaking at TV9’s What India Thinks Today Summit 2025, he shared his thoughts on the evolving Indian film industry. He stated, “Maybe it’s going to become Indian cinema after a few years.”
Vijay spoke about how Telugu cinema had to struggle to gain a wider audience. He explained, “Telugu cinema had to fight for a bigger audience. When Baahubali was made no one knew it would become such a hit. If it had been a flop, it could have ended many careers and brought a lot of burden on the producer. Everyone promoted the film well, and that opened doors for many. So, we have to fight for our place. We need to fight for attention and we need to fight for love.”
The success of Baahubali paved the way for many South Indian films to gain recognition beyond regional borders. Today, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam films are attracting audiences nationwide, making Indian cinema more diverse and inclusive.
In recent years, South Indian films like Pushpa, RRR and Kantara have become massive hits across the country. This proves that language is no longer a barrier for audiences. Vijay who has worked in both Telugu and Hindi films believes this is just the start of a bigger shift. He added, “It will change but right now we are having a good time and we are very happy about that.”
Vijay also predicted a strong comeback for Hindi films. He believes that fresh talent from across India will help bring new ideas to Bollywood. He said, “From this vacuum, Hindi film cinema will find its great directors from the heartland of India, apart from Mumbai – that is my prediction. They will make great Hindi films.”
With changing audience preferences, filmmakers from smaller towns and different states are getting opportunities to tell unique stories. This shift could lead to a new golden era for Hindi cinema.
Vijay also talked about the role of digital streaming platforms in promoting regional films. He believes that the rise of OTT platforms has helped break linguistic barriers, allowing audiences to enjoy content from different parts of the country. Comparing it to K-pop’s global influence, he said, “If people love K-pop band BTS then why won’t people in the South like films from the North and vice versa? It will be Indian cinema and that change will happen.”
On the professional front, Vijay is gearing up for the release of his film Kingdom which is set to hit theaters on May 30, 2025. Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor has lent his voice for the Hindi teaser of the movie. He was last seen in Family Stra. He was also part of Kalki 2898AD directed by Nag Ashwin and starring Prabhas.
