Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Rises: 1644 Killed, 2000 Injured

The death toll in the devastating Myanmar Earthquake is rising steadily. According to the latest information, the death toll has risen to 1644 after the earthquake in the Southeast Asian country. At the same time, more than 2000 people are reported to be injured. Along with this, a massive rescue operation is going on in Myanmar. Let us tell you that on February 28, Myanmar was shaken by six consecutive earthquakes and this sequence continues even today. A total of 16 earthquakes have occurred in Myanmar from yesterday till today.

High risk of earthquake in Myanmar

Seismic risk is at a high level in Myanmar due to the collision between the Eurasian and Indo-Australian plates. According to earthquake parameters provided by the International Seismological Center, about 140 events with a magnitude greater than or equal to 3.0 have occurred in Myanmar and its surrounding areas every year from 1990 to 2019. This proves that Myanmar is vulnerable to the dangers of moderate and large magnitude earthquakes, including the risk of tsunamis along its long coastline. The Sagaing Fault increases the seismic risk for Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago and Yangon, where 46 percent of Myanmar’s population lives.
