AI in India: OpenAI CEO Says Country is ‘Outpacing the World’

AI in India: India is making remarkable progress in adopting artificial intelligence (AI), according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. During his visit in February, Altman praised India’s role in the AI revolution, calling it OpenAI’s second-largest market after the United States. He highlighted the creativity and rapid advancements in AI within the country.

AI Growth in India

Altman shared his thoughts on social media, stating, “What’s happening with AI adoption in India right now is amazing to watch. We love to see the explosion of creativity—India is outpacing the world.” His comment came as OpenAI introduced a new AI feature allowing users to create Studio Ghibli-style animated images. This feature quickly became popular among Indian users who used it to recreate famous cricket moments and historical events.

India’s Role in the AI Revolution

During his visit, Altman emphasized India’s importance in the AI industry. He noted that the number of OpenAI users in India had tripled within a year. He also expressed his excitement about the country’s progress, stating that India should be a leader in AI development. The Indian market has shown significant interest in AI technologies, from chatbots like ChatGPT to image-generation tools.

Viral AI Image Trend in India

A major reason for the increased interest in AI in India is the popularity of OpenAI’s image-generation capabilities. Recently, Indian users have widely used the Studio Ghibli-style image feature to recreate cricketing moments from tournaments like the 1983 and 2011 World Cups, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the 2025 Champions Trophy. Even Altman joined the trend by sharing an AI-generated image of himself as an Indian cricketer.

 Advancements in AI Technology

OpenAI’s latest update, GPT-4o, has made image generation more advanced and efficient. Unlike previous versions that relied on external tools like DALL-E, the new model generates images directly within ChatGPT. This allows for better accuracy and a stronger connection between text and visuals. OpenAI has also demonstrated other AI applications, such as creating infographics, photorealistic images and digital presentations.

 India’s Future in AI

With its rapid AI adoption, India is becoming a key player in the global AI industry. Indian developers and businesses are actively exploring AI applications in various sectors including healthcare, finance and entertainment. As the country continues to invest in AI research and innovation, it is expected to play a leading role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
