The Waqf (Amendment) Bill-2025 brought by the central government has finally been approved by Parliament. There was a long debate on this bill for two days in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the bill in both the houses and gave a strong reply to the objections of the opposition. The bill was passed in both the houses. However, the ruling party rejected the amendments made by the opposition. It said that this would benefit Muslim minorities.
The main opposition Congress party on Friday announced that it will soon challenge the controversial Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 passed by Parliament in the Supreme Court. “The INC will very soon be challenging in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.” Congress party national general secretary Jairam Ramesh X posted on Twitter. “We are confident and will continue to resist all assaults of the Modi Govt on the principles, provisions, and practices that are contained in the Constitution of India,” he said. It is known that the opposition parties, including the Congress, have strongly opposed the Waqf Bill. They are criticizing the bill as unconstitutional and anti-Muslim.

However, the government, which described it as a historic reform, said it would benefit Muslim women and oppressed minorities. The bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday with 128 votes in favor and 95 against. Earlier on Wednesday, it was passed in the Lok Sabha with 288 votes in favor.
Jairam Ramesh said that the petition filed by the Congress party against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) passed by the Center in 2019 is also under consideration in the Supreme Court. Similarly, the petitions filed by the Congress party on the legality of the Right to Information Amendment Act, 2019 (RTI Act, 2005), and the 2024 Election Code of Conduct Amendments are also under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court. Jairam Ramesh said that the Protection of Places of Worship Act, 1991, which was brought to maintain the status quo of places of worship in the country after the demolition of the Babri Masjid, is also under consideration in the Supreme Court.
However, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju clarified that ‘our government does not intend to harm anyone’s religious beliefs’. He said that the purpose of the bill is to remove complexities, bring transparency, and improve the functioning of the waqf board using technology.
