Government Blocks Online Gaming: MeitY has issued 1410 blocking directions related to online betting/gambling/gaming websites (including mobile applications) between the year 2022-25 (up to February 2025). Directorate General of GST Intelligence Headquarters ‘DGGI’ is also investigating offshore entities involved in the supply of online money gaming/betting/gambling. So far, DGGI, in coordination with MeitY, has blocked 357 websites/URLs of illegal/non-compliant offshore online money gaming entities under the IT Act. About Rs 126 crore was frozen. DGGI has advised people to be vigilant and avoid connecting with offshore online money gaming platforms, and the Government has blocked 357 online gaming websites.
According to Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasad. The IT Rules 2021 impose specific obligations on intermediaries, including social media intermediaries and online gaming intermediaries. They are expected not to host, store or publish any information that violates any applicable law. They are also mandated to ensure their accountability, including their prompt action towards the removal of unlawful information classified under the IT Rules 2021. Based on complaints received against the order of the government or any unlawful information.

Such unlawful information includes any information which, among other things, is harmful to children or which relates to or encourages money laundering or gambling, or which promotes enmity between different groups on grounds of religion or caste with an intent to incite violence, or which is misinformation, patently false, untrue or misleading, or which threatens the unity, integrity, defence, security or sovereignty of India, public order or which violates any law for the time being in force.
Government Statement:
Advised to follow the guidelines of the Advertising Standards Council of India regarding online gaming addiction. The Ministry of Education has issued advisories on ‘Overcoming Harms of Online Gaming’. And ‘Safe Online Gaming for Children’ for parents and teachers. Further, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has issued an advisory to all private satellite television channels regarding ‘Advertising on Online Games, Fantasy Sports etc’. Advising all broadcasters to follow the guidelines issued by the Advertising Standards Council of India.
