Why is the project special?

Making the terminal capable of handling approximately 3.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually. It is Colombo’s first fully automated deep-water terminal. It is designed to enhance cargo handling capabilities, improve vessel turnaround times, and enhance the port’s position as a major transshipment hub in South Asia.

Construction of the Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT) began in early 2022 and has progressed rapidly since then.
