Telangana HC upholds Death Sentence in 2013 Hyderabad Bomb Blast Case

Hyderabad Bomb Blast Case: The death sentence given to five senior members of the outlawed Indian Mujahideen terrorist group, who were involved in the 2013 Hyderabad twin bombings that killed 18 people and injured 131 more, was affirmed by the Telangana High Court on Tuesday.

The High Court’s division bench rejected the inmates’ pleas, upholding the December 2016 death sentence imposed by the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court. In the busy Dilsukhnagar neighborhood of Hyderabad, on February 21, 2013, Yasin Bhatkal, Zia-ur-Rehman alias Waqas, Asadullah Akhtar alias Haddi, Tehseen Akhtar, and Aizaz Shaikh were convicted of carrying out the coordinated bombings.

All 5 to hang, rules Telangana High Court:

The court ruled that the trial court’s decision was reasonable and supported by substantial evidence. Because the act was “rarest of the rare,” the judges determined that it deserved the worst penalty possible. All five had already been found guilty by the NIA court under several provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Explosive Substances Act, and the Indian Penal Code.

After the High Court’s ruling, the convicted still have the right to appeal to the Supreme Court. In Dilsukhnagar, the twin explosions happened seconds apart close to a busy bus stop and a well-known snack shop. After the ruling, security was increased in several important Hyderabadi landmarks.
