Apple Builds $22B worth iPhones in India in a Year

According to the media sources, Apple has assembled $22 billion worth of iPhones in the past 12 months, continuing its reliance on India to diversify away from China. About 60% more iPhones are now manufactured in India thanks to the Tim Cook-led corporation, and 20% of all iPhones are now put together there.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s minister of IT and electronics, had earlier this week disclosed that Apple exported ₹1.5 trillion (about $17.4 billion) worth of Indian-made iPhones in the fiscal year that ended in March 2025.

iPhones Manufacturing Unit In India:

At the moment, Apple operates three iPhone assembly facilities in India: one in Karnataka, two in Tamil Nadu. The Tata Group runs Apple’s other two operations in Tamil Nadu, while Foxconn runs one of the units there.

Additionally, Apple has promoted the establishment of manufacturing facilities in India for its suppliers from China, Japan, Taiwan, and other nations. Leading suppliers Foxlink (cables), Aequs (enclosures), and Sunwoda (battery packs) have begun production in India.

Made-in-India iPhones: Local Value Hits 20%

Over the past few years, Apple has been actively working to grow its supply ecosystem in India. According to a previous report, Apple’s local value addition for a variety of models was between 5 and 8% when it began manufacturing in India in 2020 under the production-linked incentive (PLI) plan. However, this has since increased significantly to about 20% for a variety of models.

Notably, the tech giant had begun assembling the iPhone 16 Pro models in India last year, and it doubled down on its efforts to manufacture the iPhone 15 variation there.

Trump’s Tariff Effects:

Following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of “reciprocal” tariffs, Apple’s iPhone shipments from India to the US have increased, according to the Bloomberg report. It is also anticipated that the Cupertino-based tech behemoth will give its US customers preference for iPhones sourced from its Indian supply chain.

On Saturday, the Trump administration declared that computers, smartphones, and other electronic gadgets would not be subject to its reciprocal duties. This implies that iPhones manufactured in China will also receive a reprieve with a lower tariff of 20% compared to the total 145% levied by the US government, while iPhones made in India will not be subject to further duties for the time being.
