US Immigration Staff Told to Retire or Risk Layoffs

US Immigration Staff Told to Retire or Risk Layoffs

Risk Layoffs: The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is reportedly preparing for job cuts. According to a post by former USCIS advisor Doug Rand, employees received an internal email asking them to either retire early or risk being laid off. This decision is part of a larger plan to reduce the number of workers at the agency.

Risk Layoffs:
If these layoffs happen, it could cause longer waiting times for immigration processing. Many people depend on USCIS for visa approvals, family reunification, and work permits. For example, US citizens waiting for their spouses, parents adopting children from abroad, and hospitals looking for foreign doctors could all face delays.

Doug Rand warned that if the agency loses more staff, backlogs will increase. In the past, a similar situation occurred in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Back then, USCIS lost many workers due to a hiring freeze caused by a drop in revenue. This led to a massive backlog in immigration applications.

To address that, USCIS had later hired new officers and raised application fees to meet staffing needs. However, with the current warning of job cuts, the same issues might return.

Rand also said that a backlog in immigration processing can affect national security. If applications are not processed on time, it becomes harder to properly verify applicants. Delays in background checks could pose risks if not handled carefully.

Currently, over 20,000 people work at USCIS, but it is unclear how many are at risk. This internal change could affect millions of immigrants and their families who are waiting for approvals.

The situation is raising concern among lawmakers as well. Both Republicans and Democrats may face pressure from people struggling with immigration delays.

This possible reduction in USCIS staff may worsen an already slow system, creating more problems for immigrants, families, and US institutions that rely on timely visa processing.
