5 Facts About Justice B.R. Gavai: India’s Next CJI

Justice B.R. Gavai, a native of Amravati, Maharashtra, joined the bar in 1985 and was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2019. After incumbent Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna retires, Justice B.R. 5 Facts About Justice B.R. Gavai:

1. Justice Gavai is going to be the Chief Justice Of India for just six months as he is going to retire in November. The most important thing to notice here is, he is going to be the second Dalit to hold the chief Justice post after Justice KG Balakrishna. Justice KG. Balakrishna severed as Chief Justice of India from January 14, 2007 to May 12th, 2010.


2. Justice B.R. Gavai is known as the Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor for the Nagpur Bench in the 2000s. Justice Gavai was appointed as the Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor in the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court. He took charge in August 1992.

3. He has started his career as Judge in 2003 and he became the Additional judge of the Bombay High Court. Following this he was promoted as the permanent judge in 2005. Apart from this he became as Supreme Court Judge in 2019.

4. Born in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gavai began practicing law in 1985 and collaborated with former Advocate General and Maharashtra High Court judge Raja Bhonsale. From 1987 until 1990, he practiced independently at the Bombay High Court. He thereafter primarily practiced constitutional and administrative law before the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench.

5. Justice B.R. Gavai was a part of several important judgments throughout his tenure as a Supreme Court judge. These include the Supreme Court’s ruling that the electoral bonds program is unlawful and the ruling that upholds the Center’s 2016 decision to demonetize.
