The major telecom companies in India are gearing up to increase their mobile recharge prices once again. This comes as a shock to mobile users who are already dealing with rising costs in various sectors. According to reports, the price hike is expected to be between 10% to 20% by the end of this year, a move that will affect millions of mobile users.
Telecom companies like Vodafone Idea are at the forefront of these price increases. The company is transitioning from 4G to 5G, which requires substantial investments in infrastructure. This has prompted them to raise tariffs to cover the costs. Similarly, other major players like Jio and Airtel may also announce price hikes in the coming months.
This price hike is largely driven by the companies’ need to improve Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) and achieve better returns on investments. It is noteworthy that telecom companies had already raised their tariffs last year in July, and this will mark the fourth such increase in the last six years, according to industry experts.
The hike in mobile recharge prices follows other price increases in essential goods and services. For instance, the central government recently raised the price of cooking gas by Rs. 50 per cylinder, adding to the financial strain on common citizens. Additionally, fuel prices have seen an increase in excise duty, further compounding the pressure on household budgets.
The last significant hike in mobile recharge prices was in July 2024, when the telecom companies raised their tariffs by 25%. Similar hikes were implemented in 2021 and 2019. This year, it is expected that by December, the mobile recharge prices could rise by up to 15%.
As the prices of essential services continue to climb, people are expressing concern about the growing cost of living. The price hike in mobile recharges is seen as the latest in a series of financial pressures faced by the common man, who is already reeling from increases in fuel, gas and other basic commodities.
