Pahalgam terror attack: Debasish Bhattacharya, a Hindu Brahmin and Bengali professor at Assam University in Silchar. He narrowly escaped being shot during the horrific Pahalgam terror attack by chanting the Islamic phrase “Kalima.” He was vacationing in Jammu and Kashmir with his family when the incident occurred.
Just twenty minutes into their excursion to the Baisaran meadows, Bhattacharya heard a gunshot. At first, he assumed it was fired by the forest department to scare away wild animals.
Debasish Bhattacharya’s Escape:
In a recent interview, he said, “We were just enjoying the view when I heard a gunshot. I asked about it, and someone mentioned it might have come from the forest department to scare away wild animals.”
Soon after, he saw a man open fire on a tourist following a brief exchange with a couple. Bhattacharya added that he witnessed four fully armed terrorists begin shooting indiscriminately. As the chaos unfolded, people around him dropped to their knees and began reciting the Kalima—the Islamic declaration of faith.
Escape from Terrorists:
He said, “I followed them too. The man next to me was shot by a terrorist who approached us. Then the terrorist looked at me and asked what I was doing.”
The attacker said, “Kya bol raha hai?” in Hindi. Terrified, Bhattacharya began chanting the Kalima more loudly and didn’t respond to the question. He added, “I don’t know what happened—he just turned around and walked away to rejoin his group on the other side.”
This angle of the attack clearly shows that the terrorists had planned their targets and started hunting deliberately. Surviving the ordeal, Bhattacharya later told the media that chanting the Kalima saved his life. Once the terrorists left, he, his wife, and his son immediately fled the scene.
Miraclous Escape:
After fleeing the scene, he said he jumped from a 7-foot-high fence. Then followed horse footprints to escape. His horse guide eventually returned and led them to safety. From there, they somehow made their way back to their hotel rooms.
