India’s night travels on the rail will soon be history with the arrival of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train. With its combination of speed, comfort, and technology, the fast-train marks a new-fangled era in opposition to the venerable Rajdhani Express. Now, IRCTC To Launch Vande Bharat With its modern infrastructure and state-of-the-art technologies, the project will fundamentally change long-distance travel.
The night variant of the mythical Vande Bharat Express has been designed particularly for night travels. In contrast to its daytime counterpart, the train features plush sleeper berths for maximum comfort. The train has been built to run at a speed of 180 km/h and features quicker and more convenient travel within India. The train will take over luxury trains like the Rajdhani Express and is a new standard for railway travel.
Composition: It consists of 16 coaches—11 AC 3-tier coaches (611 passengers), 4 AC 2-tier coaches (188 passengers), and 1 AC First Class coach (24 passengers) with a total of 823 passengers.
Speed: Its maximum speed is 180 km/h with operating speed 160 km/h, with rapid movement.
Comfort: Automatic door, sleeper berths ergonomic in comfort, Wi-Fi, charging point through USB, modern toilet with shower, and better sound insulation make the passengers more comfortable.
Safety: With Kavach collision avoidance system, fire-resistant material, and stronger buffers for better safety, the train protects the passengers.
Production and Testing
Developed and produced by Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Titagarh Rail Systems, and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), the train went through stringent tests. Initial prototype trials were successfully carried out on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad route, and further trials were performed on the Khajuraho–Mahoba route to deal with interior quality issues.
Launch Timeline and Routes
The first route, Thirvananthapuram–Mangaluru, will become operational by early 2025. The possible future routes could be Thiruvananthapuram–Bengaluru and Kanyakumari–Srinagar. Nine trains would be made by end-2025 by Indian Railways and another 50 would be made by 2026–2027.
