Simhachalam temple tragedy: Wall collapse, death toll rises

Eight devotees, five of them women, have been killed in a tragic accident. When a cement wall near the Rs 300 ticket counter collapsed during a huge crowd at around 3 am on Wednesday. At the Simhachalam Appanna Swamy temple in Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh. Dozens were injured in the accident of Simhachalam temple tragedy, leaving temple visitors and officials in a state of panic and grief.

Police and fire brigade officials quickly reached the place and acted decisively after the accident. The rescue operation was underway to clear the debris and shift the wounded to hospitals within the nearby region for treatment. Officials worked round the clock in order not to incur further causality and to provide immediate relief to the injured.

Festival crowd and cause of collapse


The temple was heavily crowded due to the Chandanotsavam, which is a pious annual function that attracts an enormous number of devotees. Thousands of pilgrims waited in a line to participate in rituals. The hooligan crowd and structural shortcomings might have caused the wall collapse, but formal inquiry will verify the cause likely.

Home Minister’s intervention

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister V Anitha went to the spot to oversee personally the relief operations and monitor the situation. Her visit ensured the public that the government was committed to finding a solution to the tragedy. And providing timely relief to the victims and their families.

The tragedy has called for better crowd management and security of infrastructure at such large religious sites across India. The authorities are going to conduct a thorough review of the temple grounds to make sure that such incidents do not take place in the future and also install preventive measures.

The wall collapse at Simhachalam temple during the Chandanotsavam festival is a wake-up call. About safety and prudence taking precedence in such congregations. While the people cry over lost lives, they also work on measures to ensure devotees’ safety at holy places.
