India to Launch E-Passports in May 2025: What You Need to Know

India to Launch E-Passports in May 2025: A milestone project towards revolutionizing India’s passport services, the Ministry of External Affairs and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) inked the second phase of the Passport Seva Programme (PSP-V2.0). An elite long-term program, it will enable the utilization of microchip-enabled e-passports which will be secure and convenient when overseas. Since it is India’s largest e-governance project, the second phase will utilize current technology for nine-and-a-half years.

E-Passport Revolution

Best news for PSP-V2.0 has been the release of e-passports with enhanced microchips holding biometric data. Different benefits will be provided by the passports:

Increased Security: Internet security capabilities will bring about fraud and abuse-proof security.

Improved Immigration Process: Effective authentication will allow simple processing at airports.

Global Harmonised Standards: E-passports will meet International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards so that travel takes place without a hitch.

TCS’s Role in PSP-V2.0

TCS, India’s largest software exporter, will use state-of-the-art technology solutions to improve passport facilities, with emphasis on:

Digitization and Automation: Facilitating the process of passport issuing.

Enhanced Data Protection: Enhancing cyber security features to protect confidential information.

Customer-Centric Services: Providing convenience and ease for applicants through electronic media.

While TCS is a part of technology, printing and production of passports would remain with the government. Indian Security Press at Nashik and National Informatics Centre are shaping the security setup for the benefit of e-passport integrity.
