India Tightens Cyber Security Amid Operation Sindoor

Cyber Security: Following Operation Sindoor, a retaliatory operation by Indian defense forces against nine terrorist base camps of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), government sources confirmed that India has remained on high alert since the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, with a continued focus on protecting vital digital infrastructure.

Security Audit:

Potential cyber intrusions are being closely watched by authorities, especially those that are purportedly coming from across the border. One of the most significant hacks in recent memory was an effort by a Pakistani cyber group to deface the website of Armoured Vehicle Nigam Ltd (AVNL), a significant state-run defense PSU. The site was immediately pulled offline for a thorough security audit, according to officials.

Army School Website Hacked:

The same group, calling itself Team Insane PK, claimed responsibility for attacking other high-value organizations, including the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses and the Military Engineering Service. However, senior think tank officials denied any hijack of their website. The attackers also targeted and took down the websites of at least four Army Public Schools, including APS Nagrota and APS Sunjuwan in Jammu and Kashmir, in what appears to be a coordinated strike. They breached and defaced the Army College of Nursing website in Jalandhar on April 25, displaying disturbing images that referenced the Pahalgam incident. The landing page showed graphic visuals alongside the message, “YOU ARE HACKED!!! TEAM INSANE PK.”

Strict Measures on Cyber Security:

According to official reports, the army is actively reinforcing cybersecurity across India. It has also begun tightening security for all army schools and websites affiliated with the Army Welfare Education Society. Investigators are working to determine the full extent of the attempted breaches. Government organizations and cybersecurity experts are identifying vulnerabilities and strengthening digital defenses, especially around critical assets and sensitive sectors.

Meanwhile, officials are closely monitoring social media platforms for fake news and disinformation campaigns. Under the current IT Rules, authorities have announced plans to act against content they find deceptive or intended to incite unrest.

Hackers recently targeted the Rajasthan education department’s website, adding to the growing wave of cyberattacks. They mocked the Indian Air Force and referenced Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman’s 2019 capture. The attackers also posted offensive content related to the April 22 attack.

As India-Pakistan tensions rise again, cybersecurity plays an increasingly vital role in the nation’s defense strategy. Reports indicate that the government remains committed to building long-term resilience and strengthening digital surveillance to counter potential threats.
