Cashless Treatment for Road Accidents:
Road accidents cause serious concern across India. A famous movie dialogue says, “A road accident doesn’t just bring down a person; it brings down an entire family.” Many victims die because they do not get medical care on time. The central government introduced a new plan to reduce such deaths.
Starting May 5, 2025, road accident victims can get cashless treatment for up to seven days at government-notified hospitals. The cost of treatment can go up to ₹1.5 lakh. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued the official order. Timely medical care helps save lives during accidents.
Any person injured in a road accident on public roads qualifies for this scheme. The National Health Authority (NHA) runs the program. It works with police, hospitals, and state health agencies to offer care without delay.
Hospitals listed under the scheme will treat victims for up to seven days after the accident. The government set a ₹1.5 lakh limit per case. If a person reaches a hospital not listed under the scheme, the facility must follow government rules to give initial care and stabilize the patient.
A list of designated hospitals is usually available through the State Road Safety Council or the National Health Authority’s portal.
Each state or union territory will use its State Road Safety Authority as the nodal agency. This agency will work with the NHA to add hospitals to the program, help victims, and settle bills through a dedicated portal.
The government formed an 11-member steering committee to supervise the plan. The Road Secretary leads this group. Members include the CEO of the National Health Authority and an Additional Secretary from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari shared alarming data earlier. In 2023, India saw 4.80 lakh road accidents and 1.72 lakh deaths. The government introduced this scheme after recognizing the urgent need for faster medical help.
This plan gives families financial relief and ensures faster emergency care. Authorities aim to reduce the number of deaths caused by delays in treatment and improve response systems after accidents.
