How India’s ‘Iron Dome’ Akashteer Defeated Pakistani Missiles

How India’s ‘Iron Dome’ Akashteer Defeated Pakistani Missiles

Night of May 7, following India’s pinpoint bombing under Operation Sindoor, Pakistan retaliated with a missile strike on several strategic locations in India. The Indian military responded by activating Akashteer, a domestic air defense system to intercept and neutralize aerial threats. Here’s how India’s ‘Iron Dome’ Akashteer defeated Pakistani missiles.

What Is Akashteer?
Akashteer is an advanced Air Defence Control and Reporting System (ADCRS) of Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the Indian Army. It is a digital battle hub which amalgamates inputs from several radars—ground radar and early warning aircraft—on to create a picture of current operation in real-time.

Following India’s air strike, the intelligence agencies foresaw a high probability of a counterattack by Pakistan. The missiles were downed by Pakistan later towards cities such as Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, Bathinda, and Chandigarh—all strategically well-positioned since they were near the country’s key defense equipment.

Akashteer Defeated Pakistani Missiles

Akashteer played a crucial role in intercepting and destroying all incoming attacking missiles. The system:

Merged data from a number of radar systems to follow airborne dangers in real-time.

Facilitated quick decision and independent launch of defense missiles.

Coordinated interceptors from missiles and electronic countermeasures to annihilate danger before threats were able to deliver their intended payload.

Comparison to Israel’s Iron Dome:
While Akashteer has been called India’s ‘Iron Dome’, the system is different in several critical respects from the Israeli system. While the Iron Dome is mostly employed to shoot down short-range rockets, Akashteer is a command and control system, combining multiple air defense assets, which collectively form a large canopy.

The induction of Akashteer on a mission of success is a milestone for India’s air defense. By protecting such strategic facilities and civilian targets from damage, India has established the worth of the system under actual combat conditions, increasing its capability to safeguard against aerial threats.
