On the homepage, there is a section called “Trading Holidays.” This section lists all the official stock market holidays for the year. According to this list, the stock market will remain open on May 12, 2025, even though it is Buddha Purnima.

In May 2025, there is only one official holiday — Maharashtra Day, which was observed on May 1. This means there is no short trading week in May, and all other days, including Buddha Purnima, will have normal trading.

The stock market has recently shown some weakness due to tensions between India and Pakistan. On Friday, May 9, 2025, both the Sensex and Nifty 50 dropped sharply. The Sensex fell by 880 points to close at 79,454.47, and the Nifty 50 dropped 266 points to end at 24,008. The uncertainty over rising geopolitical tensions has made investors cautious.

Despite the fall, midcap and smallcap stocks performed slightly better, showing smaller losses. The total market value of companies listed on BSE dropped by around ₹2 lakh crore in just one day.

Looking ahead, there will be no stock market holidays in June and July 2025. The next official holiday will be Independence Day on August 15, 2025. Other holidays later in the year include Ganesh Chaturthi, Dussehra, Diwali, Guru Nanak Jayanti, and Christmas.
