Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced the release of extra water to the desert state of Rajasthan to support military operations in Rajasthan. This follows after the Rajasthan government officially requested Punjab to release extra water from its quota as troops stationed on the border have a high need for the resource.
While delivering a public address, CM Mann once again asserted the unwavering commitment of Punjab to national interest by stating: “Not only water, but Punjab can shed its blood for the sake of national interest.” He further added: “Whenever national interests are at stake, Punjab never takes a backseat.”
Rajasthan’s Plea for More Water
Rajasthan government asked for more water from Punjab quota to ensure proper supply to forces stationed along the border. In situations of huge deserts, water is absolutely essential for soldiers at strategic points.
India retaliated with Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025, to strike nine terror camps in PoK and Pakistan. Operations were to eliminate terror networks, such as such redoubts as Muzaffarabad and Bahawalpur. Yet, even after a strong response from India, cross-border hostilities continued with Pakistan breaching the ceasefire agreement a few times.
Since Operation Sindoor, there have been sporadic terror attacks in India from attempted drone attacks to firing of small-arms on the Line of Control (LoC). The Indian Military remains perpetually on standby, ready to keep the borders secure and conduct counterterror operations to ensure no further tensions are created.
Political and Public Reactions
The move has been welcomed by political leaders and defense strategists in large numbers. As they consider it a step in the right direction to improve national security. The masses have also supported it, realizing that Punjab has a historic role to play in securing the country.
Punjab’s action in releasing additional water to Rajasthan is in support of national security and the forces. Given that tensions still exist along the border, these actions ensure troops are adequately prepared to deal with any adversity.
