Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir has also seen its own share of militancy. Following the April 22 Pahalgam attack that claimed the lives of 26 people, including 25 Indian tourists. The security forces have been intensifying their counter-terrorism operation in the Shopian district. Indian Army’s Operation Keller is the latest operation that was launched. Right after gathering some intel regarding the movement of terrorists at Shoekal Keller, Shopian.
Rashtriya Rifles Unit of Indian Army carried out search and destroy operation on 13 May 2025 in Shoekal Keller thick forest where terrorists’ bases were. When the security forces were approaching, terrorists began intense firing, which lead to firing at both sides.
In the heavy crossfire, Indian Army neutralised three hardline militants. Their identities and group affiliations haven’t yet been verified. But sources say they are most probably linked with Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
Ongoing Operations and Security Measures
The operation is ongoing, with combing operations by security personnel to make sure there are no other threats remaining in the region. The Indian Army and Jammu & Kashmir Police are keeping a close watch on the situation since militants like to regroup after such an attack.
India’s Counter-Terrorism Strategy
Operation Keller follows hot on the heels of Operation Sindoor, India’s anti-terror air strike on terror camps in Pakistan and PoK on May 7, 2025. The government has been having a zero-tolerance approach towards terror. And the government has ensured that any future terror attack would be considered an act of war.
Public and Political Responses
The success in Shopian to kill the terrorists has been greeted with open arms by locals, who have long been terrorized by militant movements. However, there are concerns of retaliatory attacks by terror groups that have been active in the region.
