Is the Pakistan Nuclear Leak Real?: Here’s What We Know

Nuclear Leak: There has been a lot of conjecture on social media about a possible nuclear radiation leak from Pakistan’s Kirana Hills region in the wake of India’s recent precision strikes in Operation Sindoor. The situation is still unclear due to unsubstantiated reports and the unusual use of a specialist US aircraft, even though India has denied targeting the sensitive area, and neither Pakistani nor international officials have formally confirmed a radiation emergency.

NO Confirmed Information:

As of May 13, 2025, officials have not reported any severe medical crises in Pakistan that would suggest a high-level nuclear radiation release. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Pakistani authorities have not confirmed any nuclear disaster, despite recent Indian military activity near possible nuclear storage sites like Kirana Hills.

Reports claim the United States flew a radiation monitoring plane over the region, adding to the speculation. While this move shows vigilance and surveillance, it doesn’t confirm an ongoing radiation emergency. Online claims about rapidly spreading radiation currently appear exaggerated.

Kirana Hills: An area of strategic defense

Kirana Hills, located in Pakistan’s Sargodha district, serves as a well-fortified military zone with high strategic importance. Experts believe it contains more than ten underground tunnels, and reports suggest Pakistan stores some of its nuclear warheads there. Its proximity to key military sites, like the Khushab nuclear complex (about 75 km away) and the Sargodha Air Base (about 20 km away), further emphasizes its sensitive nature.

Kirana Hills was not targeted during Operation Sindoor, according to the Indian Air Force (IAF). AK Bharti, the Air Marshal, said clearly, “We have not hit Kirana Hills, whatever is there.” India insists that the only targets of the strikes were Pakistani military objectives and terrorist infrastructure.

The Sources of the Leak Rumor

Rumors of a radioactive leak began after reports claimed that Indian strikes occurred near Sargodha, close to the Kirana Hills. Unverified claims about U.S. and Egyptian aircraft monitoring the area further fueled the speculation. However, U.S. agencies have not released any official details about these aircraft or their missions.

Some sources also alleged that India used a BrahMos missile in an attack near Kirana Hills. But so far, no credible evidence supports the claim that India directly targeted Pakistan’s nuclear facilities in the area.

B350 AMS aircraft in Pak Airspace:

The alleged presence of a Beechcraft B350 AMS aircraft in Pakistani airspace raises serious concerns. The Aerial Measuring System (AMS), a highly specialized program created for nuclear disaster response, includes this aircraft, which is owned by the US Department of Energy. Its main duties include mapping nuclear fallout, detecting radiation leaks, and offering assistance during radioactive incidents. This isn’t your average passenger or military plane.

Pak Nuclear Leak Real?

The timing of the aircraft’s reported appearance raised concerns, as it followed India’s heavy strikes on several Pakistani airbases, including Mushaf in Sargodha near Kirana Hills. In the past, the U.S. has used this specific aircraft type for post-blast surveillance during nuclear tests, nuclear exercises, and after major incidents like the Fukushima disaster. The U.S. rarely deploys it overseas, and such missions typically require a clear objective and diplomatic clearance.
