‘Arunachal is ours forever’, India makes it clear to China

Arunachal: India has reacted strongly to China’s renaming of some areas in Arunachal Pradesh. The Ministry of External Affairs has denied China’s claims that the area is its own. It has clarified that the name changes will not change the reality and that Arunachal Pradesh will always be an integral part of India. There is a dispute between the two countries over Arunachal. In addition, it has expressed concern about the threat of flooding due to the huge hydroelectric project being built by China on the Brahmaputra river.

In Detail

India has strongly condemned China’s recent attempts to rename some places in Arunachal Pradesh, which it claims as its territory. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has categorically rejected China’s claims that the state is being called ‘Zhongnan’ or ‘South Tibet’. “China is continuing its efforts to rename places in Arunachal Pradesh,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Wednesday. China has also objected to visits by Indian leaders to Arunachal Pradesh.

“In line with our clear policy, we completely reject such attempts. No amount of manipulation or name changes can change the reality of Arunachal Pradesh. It is an integral part of India. It was, is, and will always be part of India,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.

China’s evasive actions on Arunachal

China has often claimed Arunachal Pradesh as its territory and has been announcing new names for several places in the state. In 2024, India rejected a list of 30 places that China had proposed new names for. The border dispute over Arunachal Pradesh has been a source of tension between India and China for the past few decades. It borders the Tibet Autonomous Region. China claims the region as part of historical Tibet. However, India has been administering the region itself since independence in 1947.

In recent years, concerns have also grown about the use of water resources, in addition to the land dispute. In particular, the world’s largest hydroelectric project that China is building on the Yarlung Zangpo River has led to discussions in this direction. The dam, to be built in Medog County in Tibet, will be located upstream of the Siang River, which enters India. The same river flows into Assam as the Brahmaputra. An Arunachal Pradesh MP has described the Chinese project as a water bomb.

The AP MP says

“This dam, which has a capacity to generate 60,000 MW of electricity, is no ordinary project. It is a weapon designed to influence India and other downstream countries through water,” he said. He recalled the massive floods of June 2000. He alleged that those floods were caused by China releasing water downstream. At that time, many bridges in Arunachal were destroyed. “If China releases water unexpectedly in the future, South Asian countries like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Bangladesh will face serious losses,” he warned.

But keeping this threat in mind, he also supported the construction of an alternative dam in Arunachal itself to control the water hazards from the Chinese dam.”In line with our clear policy, we completely reject such attempts. No amount of manipulation or name changes can change the reality of Arunachal Pradesh. It is an integral part of India. It was, is, and will always be part of India,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.
