THIS New Indian Netflix Series Is a ‘CRINGE KHICHDI’?

Netflix Series: Despite its extraordinary visuals and star-studded cast, Netflix India’s latest romantic dramedy The Royals, starring Bhumi Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter, has failed to strike a chord with audience, and here’s why:

Bhumi Pednekar’s Performance: A Major Letdown

One of the most common criticisms aimed at The Royals is Bhumi Pednekar’s underwhelming portrayal of the female lead. Many viewers found her performance flat, overly stylized, and lacking emotional depth. Her character, a spirited startup founder thrust into royal circles, could have offered a lot of nuance, but instead came off as exaggerated and awkward.

Distracting Appearance: Botox & Fillers Backlash

Adding fuel to the fire, Bhumi’s visibly altered facial features, especially her lip fillers and possible use of Botox, became a talking point. Viewers pointed out that her expressions appeared stiff and unnatural, affecting the believability of her emotional scenes. Critics argue that her cosmetic enhancements distracted from her acting and diluted the authenticity of her character. On social media, several users even remarked that her face looked “frozen” during key dramatic moments.

A Weak Script & Predictable Plot

Beyond the performances, the show itself struggles with writing. The storyline — a mix of fairytale royalty meets millennial ambition — is riddled with clichés, predictable twists, and surface-level character arcs. The attempt to blend tradition with modernity feels forced, leaving the audience disconnected.

Style Over Substance

While the show boasts lavish production design and opulent sets, it often feels like the aesthetic took precedence over storytelling. Grand visuals, fashion montages, and palatial backdrops are frequent, but do little to mask the lack of engaging content.

Wasted Potential, in a Netflix Series

Given the cast and budget, The Royals had the ingredients for a fresh, entertaining romantic drama. Instead, it delivered what many are calling a “cringe fest” — high on gloss, low on substance, and lacking the emotional core needed to resonate.
