Encounter in Manipur: The northeastern state of Manipur is currently under President’s rule. However, there is no stopping the riots there. Ten militants were killed in an encounter by Assam Rifles in Chandel district. Security forces launched an operation near New Samtal village on the Indo-Myanmar border following information about the presence of militants. The jawans returned fire after the militants opened fire. A large number of arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot. More details regarding the incident are awaited.
The Eastern Command’s official account of the encounter said, “The Assam Rifles forces launched an operation based on intelligence inputs about the movement of militant cadres near New Samtal village in Khengjai tehsil of Chandel district.” During the operation, the militants opened fire on the security forces, but the jawans immediately counter-fired and took tactical action.
“10 militants were killed in the gunfight. A large number of weapons and ammunition were recovered from the spot,” the army said in a statement. The security forces have not yet officially released any information on the details of the militants killed. However, official sources said that the incident is part of an ongoing operation.
Meanwhile, for the last two years, tensions have been rising in Manipur due to ethnic conflict. The northeastern state has been rocked by clashes between the Meiti and Kuki tribes in Manipur since the first week of May 2023. Violent incidents and firing have been a constant concern. Even after the central forces stepped in, the situation has not changed. Since then, Manipur has been in the news in one way or another. Finally, in February this year, when Chief Minister Biren Singh resigned, President’s rule was imposed there.
Saying that there is a high possibility of violence erupting again in their state, 21 Manipur MLAs wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April. They said that the situation has not changed even after the imposition of President’s rule. In the letter, they demanded that President’s rule be lifted and a popular government be formed. Meanwhile, the opposition is heavily criticizing Modi’s silence on the issue of Manipur.
