Telangana: The central government has introduced an employment guarantee scheme for unemployed people living at home in rural areas. Although the daily wage has been fixed at Rs. 307, there are allegations that the workers are receiving a lesser amount. The Telangana government has ordered to provide facilities to the workers at their workplaces. Officials have made it clear that if the workers fall ill or meet with an accident, they should be immediately taken to the nearest hospital. The government has set up a help center for problems.
The central government has introduced the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) with the aim of providing employment to the unemployed or housebound people in rural areas. Under this scheme, 100 days of work are provided in a year. Although it is implemented across the country, the wage rates vary from state to state. The central government has directed that Rs. 307 be paid as daily wage across the country.
Recently, it has issued orders increasing the wage rate from Rs. 300 to Rs. 307. However, there are allegations that many laborers are not receiving this amount . Although the wage money is said to be Rs. 307, the employment guarantee workers in Telangana are complaining that they are not being paid even Rs. 200. Responding to this, the officials say that the wages will be paid according to the work.
In this context, the Telangana Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department has issued instructions to the district collectors to provide all facilities to the employment guarantee scheme workers at their workplaces. Especially, keeping in mind the intensity of the summer sun, it has ordered that work should be provided only before 10 am and after 4 pm.
Officials said that all workers should be made aware of reaching their workplaces on time. If the workplace is more than 5 kilometers away, an additional 10% of the notified wage rate should be paid. A tent should be set up at the workplace. 5 liters of drinking water, a first aid kit should be made available to each worker, and ORS packets should be given. If workers fall ill or have an accident, they should be immediately taken to the nearest hospital.
If the workers work a certain amount of work per day in this financial year, the Centre has decided to pay them Rs. 307. The government has set up a help desk in Hyderabad to report problems in the implementation of the Employment Guarantee Scheme. Workers can call the toll-free number 1800 200 1001 and report their problems.
