IMD issues Orange alert for Hyderabad: Severe thunderstorms with lightning expected

Orange alert for Hyderabad: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain, thundershowers and lightning in Hyderabad. A number of places in Telangana on Sunday, May 18. Citizens need to be ready for volatile weather as gusty winds and heavy showers are on the cards for the whole day.


Widespread rain prediction

Heavy rainfall is expected in many districts of Telangana such as Nizamabad, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy, Mahabubnagar, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, Jogulamba and Gadwal. Moreover, thundershowers and lightning are expected to take place at isolated places over Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Adilabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanumakonda, Nagariddi Bhuvanur and Jangan mandals.

Hyderabad Weather Forecast

For Hyderabad, the IMD has forecasted cloudy weather with scattered rains, particularly at night and in the evening. There would likely be showers with gusty winds and temperatures are expected to fluctuate between 36°C (day) and 22°C (night).


Orange Alert Issued

IMD has also issued an Orange Alert for Hyderabad and the adjoining districts, alerting about the likelihood of heavy rain, thundershowers and hailstorms. The alert will continue until May 19, as a warning about the chances of continued rains in the subsequent days.

Arrival of Monsoon and Long-Term Forecast

Meteorologists forecast that the southwest monsoon is likely to hit Kerala on May 28, a week earlier than expected. As Hyderabad tends to get monsoon rains a week to 10 days after Kerala, the city may experience uninterrupted rain in early June.

Precautionary Measures

To ensure safety during thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, people should:

Remain indoors as much as possible and avoid going to open spaces when there are thunderstorms.

Take umbrellas or raincoats when stepping out.

Watch out for waterlogging and traffic congestion in low-lying areas.

Avoid being under trees or electricity poles during rainstorms.
