COVID Alert: Kerala Health Department Orders Mandatory Mask Usage

As Covid fears resurface in the country, Kerala has been put on alert. The state health department has been on alert due to the recent increase in corona cases in Kerala. As Covid cases are increasing in Southeast Asian countries, the state health minister Veena George has advised the people of Kerala to also be alert. The fact that 182 corona cases have been registered in Kerala in this month alone is now causing great concern for the state government. It is in this context that those with symptoms have been told to wear masks.


 

The Corona pandemic that emerged in China in 2019 has spread to countries around the world. Not only have millions of people died due to this Covid virus, but millions have been hospitalized. Many are suffering from post-Covid problems. However, every time a Corona virus variant has emerged in India, its roots lie in Kerala. In this context, the Kerala government is taking preventive measures when Corona cases have increased significantly in Hong Kong and Singapore in recent times. It is against this backdrop that the Kerala Health Department is constantly monitoring the situation.


COVID Alert: 182 cases registered

In the month of May alone, 182 Covid cases have been registered across Kerala. This has put the Kerala Health Department on alert. In the wake of the increasing cases in Southeast Asian countries, people should be vigilant, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said. People in Kottayam, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram districts in particular have been advised to take precautions. She ordered that tests be increased for those with Corona symptoms and masks be made mandatory in hospitals. Although it has been confirmed that there is no spread of the Nipah virus, they warned that people should be vigilant against diseases like dengue during the rainy season.

Minister Veena George said that the Omicron JN1 sub-variants LF7 and NB1.8 are spreading rapidly in countries like Hong Kong and Singapore. However, it was revealed that these variants have a high potential to spread the virus. It was stated that a large number of Covid cases are being reported in Southeast Asian countries, and that there is a possibility of Covid increasing in Kerala as well. Although the severity of the current variants is not high. Veena George suggested that everyone should follow protective measures.

In this month alone, out of the 182 new Covid cases in Kerala, the highest number of cases was reported in Kottayam district, 57 cases, Ernakulam 34 cases, Thiruvananthapuram 30 cases, while the remaining cases were reported in other districts. Veena George revealed that a high-level meeting of the Rapid Response Team was held under her leadership to review the Covid situation in Kerala. She said that Covid diagnostic tests will be increased for those with symptoms. She ordered to ensure the availability of RTPCR kits and safety equipment in hospitals. Masks are mandatory in hospitals, and health workers should wear them at all times.

Precautions to be taken

Minister Veena George advised that people with symptoms like cold, sore throat, cough, and shortness of breath should wear masks. She advised the elderly, pregnant women, and those suffering from serious illnesses to wear masks in public places and while traveling. She said that unnecessary visits to the hospital should be avoided.Also advised that it is good to wash hands with soap regularly, and advised that protocols should be followed while receiving treatment. Veena George also advised that treatment should be sought in the hospital itself. The minister clarified that it is not right for some private hospitals to recommend other hospitals when there are Covid cases.

 

Minister Veena George assured the people that although Covid variants are currently spreading rapidly, the severity is not high. However, she emphasized that taking precautions, getting early tests and wearing masks are key measures to prevent the spread of the virus in large numbers. On the other hand, as the monsoon season approaches, the Health Department has warned that dengue, leptospirosis, and other water-borne diseases are likely to increase.
