Mysore Pak Name Change: Family Member Responds

Mysore Pak Name Change: In the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir on 22nd of last month, there is anger across the country against Pakistan. The change of name of a sweet shop in Jaipur from Mysore Pak to ‘Mysore Shri’ has become a hot topic. While Royal Cook Nataraj opposed the name change, shop owner Anjali Jain said that the name change was done out of patriotism. There are different opinions on this decision. Linguistic experts explain the origins of the word ‘Pak’

Anjali Jain, the owner of ‘Tyohar Sweets’ from Jaipur, has changed the names of her sweets in anger against Pakistan. Mysore Pak has been changed to Mysore Shri, Moti Pak to Moti Shri, Aam Pak to Aam Shri, and Gond Pak to Gond Shri. Swarna Bhasam Pak and Chandi Bhasam Pak have also been changed to Swarna Shri and Chandi Shri.

Speaking about the name changes, Nataraj said, ‘Call it Mysore Pak. There is no other name for the invention given by our ancestors.’ In Kannada, ‘Pak’ means a substance made from sugar or jaggery. It was named Mysore Pak because it was first made in Mysore. He said that there is no need to give it any other name. In retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack, India launched Operation Sindoor and destroyed terror camps in Pakistan and PoK. This has led to heightened tensions on the Indo-Pak border.

However, sweets shop owner Anjali Jain said, “Patriotism is not limited to borders. Every citizen should have love for the country. That is why we have taken this decision.” She said that although the word ‘Pak’ has nothing to do with Pakistan, the name was changed because it sounded like the name of that country. She said that the word ‘Shri’ was added as an auspicious sign. This decision taken by some out of patriotism has become a topic of discussion. While some are supporting it, others are opposing it. They are criticizing that changing names cannot change history. In any case, this incident has led to a debate in the country.
