JN.1 Covid-19 Variant Symptoms: Not Just a Respiratory Illness Anymore

JN.1 Covid-19 Variant Symptoms: The JN.1 variant of Covid-19 is creating concern among doctors and health experts due to its wide range of symptoms. While earlier variants of the coronavirus mostly affected the lungs and respiratory system, the JN.1 strain appears to be different.

JN.1 Covid-19 Variant Symptoms:

Remain Like previous variants, JN.1 continues to cause common symptoms such as fever, dry cough, sore throat, chills, fatigue, body aches, blocked or runny nose, and difficulty in breathing. These are signs we have become familiar with over the past few years during the pandemic.

New Gastrointestinal Symptoms

Doctors have now noticed that the JN.1 variant can also affect the stomach and intestines. Patients are reporting stomach-related issues like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. These symptoms were rare in previous Covid variants, which mostly focused on the respiratory system.

How JN.1 Is Different

Medical experts say the JN.1 variant has changed over time. It can now attach to intestinal cells, which explains the new digestive symptoms. This can make it difficult to tell the difference between Covid-19 and common stomach infections.

When to Get Tested

If someone experiences both respiratory and stomach problems at the same time, or if symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting last more than two days, doctors recommend getting a Covid-19 test. Early testing can help prevent the spread of the virus and allow for proper treatment.

Where It Came From

The JN.1 variant was first found in Luxembourg in August 2023. It is a version of the Omicron BA.2.86 subvariant and has over 30 mutations. It spreads more easily but is not considered more dangerous than earlier versions, according to health experts.

Beware of Long Covid

Symptoms of JN.1 usually last a few days to two weeks. However, if someone continues to feel unwell even after recovery, it could be a case of ‘long Covid,’ a condition where symptoms last for weeks or even months.

Stay alert. If you or your family experience both stomach and flu-like symptoms, don’t ignore them. Consult a doctor and consider testing for Covid-19 to stay safe.
