Elon Musk exits Trump administration:
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has officially ended his short-term role in the Trump administration. He served as a “Special Government Employee” and led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk announced his departure through a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.”
This temporary role began on January 20, 2025, during President Donald Trump’s new term. Under U.S. law, special government employees are allowed to serve only up to 130 days in a year. Musk’s term was always intended to be short, and it ends by May 30, 2025.
During his time at DOGE, Musk aimed to reduce unnecessary government expenses. He initially planned to cut \$2 trillion in spending, but later lowered his target to \$150 billion. He faced several challenges, including pushback from other government officials and slow progress in reaching his goals. “The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government,” Musk shared.
According to reports, his time in Washington was not easy. He found the political environment frustrating and faced resistance to his efforts to make quick changes. There were also reports of disagreements between him and senior members of the administration.
Musk’s exit marks the end of what some call a “turbulent chapter.” His presence in the government led to many changes, including job cuts and lawsuits. Despite his big plans, he achieved less than expected.
Now that his role in the government is over, Musk is expected to refocus on his businesses—especially Tesla and SpaceX. Meanwhile, the future of DOGE without Musk remains uncertain. Trump, when asked about this, said, “At a certain point, I think it will end.”
Musk thanked Trump one last time for the opportunity, closing his post with appreciation for the effort to make the government more efficient.
