Breaking barriers: women cadets graduate from NDA alongside male peers

Women cadets graduate: In a path-breaking advance for gender equity in the Indian Armed Forces. The elite National Defence Academy (NDA) in Pune marked the graduation of its first-ever batch of women cadets. 17 women cadets passed out along with more than 300 male cadets as the academy saw its maiden co-ed graduating batch. This achievement points towards a new age of inclusivity and opportunity at the nation’s top military training institution.

The ‘Antim Pag’ Moment

The passing out parade was held at the historic Khetrpal Parade Ground in Khadakwasla, called the “cradle of leadership.” The cadets marched triumphantly past the ‘Antim Pag’ (last step), marking the successful culmination of their intense three-year training. The parade was witnessed by General V.K. Singh, ex-Chief of the Army Staff and present Governor of Mizoram.
NDA’s Bold Step Toward Gender Equality

NDA welcomed female cadets in 2021 after a historic Supreme Court verdict opened the door for women to enter the academy for the very first time. It was a huge step in the continuous effort towards bringing gender equality into India’s defence services. The academy has been working hard to assimilate women into its historically male bastion ever since.
Pioneers of Change

The 17 graduates have not only finished one of the toughest training courses but also set history as harbingers of change. Their perseverance, diligence, and performance set a new standard for future women entrants, demonstrating that gender is no hindrance to military excellence.
Future of Women in Uniform

These graduates will now head to their respective service academies for additional training in the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Their travels exemplify the changing mindset of the Indian military and their commitment to diversification. As the forces move forward these women stand as beacons of change, strength and hope for the future.

This graduation and passing-out parade ceremony is not just a proud moment for the NDA. It is a proud moment for the whole nation, and represents the pathway that India is charting towards developing a more diverse and equal defence establishment.
