New Flying Rules in Turkey: Some passengers rush to get off the plane the moment it lands, and let’s be honest, it’s probably the most irritating part of flying (aside from a wailing infant, of course). Whether you fly often or not, you know the type: someone immediately jumps up, opens the overhead bin, grabs their luggage, and plants themselves in the aisle as soon as the captain mutters some variation of, ‘We have landed.’ Their behavior often prompts others to follow, which results in a line of people pointlessly clutching their bags in the aisle.
Even when passengers have a connecting flight, they choose urgency over logic. But if they still have to wait for the crew to open the door, what’s the point of standing in line with their luggage? The logic remains a mystery. This behavior creates a ripple effect; as soon as one person stands, regardless of whether it’s appropriate, others follow, as if racing to nowhere. To tackle this growing impatience, the Turkish government has implemented new in-flight rules. India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) might want to consider adopting similar measures.
New Flying Rules in Turkey:
To increase safety and maintain order during flights, especially during landing and disembarkation, the Turkish government has implemented stringent new regulations for airline passengers. Turkish Airlines and all other commercial airlines operating in Turkey must follow these rules, which take effect in early May 2025.
New Rules:
1. Until the airplane completely stops at its assigned parking space and the seatbelt sign is turned off, passengers are required to remain seated and buckled up.
2. It is completely forbidden to stand in the aisle before the plane has ceased taxiing, unbuckle seat belts, or open overhead bins.
3. In order to make it obvious that passengers should stay seated and to warn that infractions will be reported, airlines must update their normal in-flight announcements.
4. People are admonished to disembark slowly and in order; yes, sitting in the aisle does not make you a king or queen.
5. Turkish media reports that authorities consider violating these regulations as disruptive passenger behavior and may impose an administrative fine of up to USD 70 (Rs 6,000). However, the Turkish government has not yet disclosed the exact amount.
6. The cabin crew now enforce these regulations, make additional safety announcements after landing, and report any misconduct for potential legal or administrative action.
Main Focus:
Authorities aim to make the disembarkation process more efficient and less chaotic, and to reduce safety hazards such as injuries from sudden stops, fallen baggage, and blocked passageways. Although regulators only recently began enforcing the new rules, they sent a message: airlines will no longer tolerate poor travel behavior.
It’s also important to note that India already enforces laws against ‘unruly behavior’ by passengers, such as those established by the DGCA, which can even lead to jail time. However, these rules primarily address harassment and other forms of disruptive conduct, and they do not specifically penalize passengers who stand up while the plane is still taxiing.

Is 10 Seconds Worth it?
If you have a connecting flight, running still makes sense. But if you suddenly jump up without reason, you only put your safety at risk to save a few seconds. Although this behavior occurs worldwide, let’s be honest, India and many Indian passengers tend to stand out when it comes to this issue. Some people argue, ‘If the crew can stand, so can we.’ Sure, but unless you’ve received the same safety training as the crew, you should probably stay seated and keep your seat belt fastened.
Passengers who stand too early or move around during taxiing risk causing injuries from abrupt stops or turbulence, dropping luggage, and blocking aisles, all of which compromise the safety of both passengers and crew. On top of that, they frustrate everyone, create congestion, and disrupt the disembarkation process.
