Russia drone attack on Ukraine:
Russia launched its largest drone attack on Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war three years ago, according to Ukraine’s Air Force. On June 1, 2025, Russia sent 472 drones across Ukrainian territory, along with seven missiles. Yuriy Ignat, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Air Force, confirmed the scale of the attack.
Earlier the same day, at least 12 Ukrainian soldiers were killed, and over 60 were injured in a missile strike on an army training unit. This attack happened in the afternoon. Ukrainian officials said there were no large troop gatherings at the time. An investigation is underway to find out how such a high number of casualties occurred. The military has promised to hold any responsible officials accountable.
The training center hit by the missile was far from the front line, but still within reach of Russian drones. Because of frequent drone attacks, Ukraine avoids mass gatherings of troops to reduce the risk of large losses.
On the same day, Ukraine reportedly carried out drone strikes inside Russia, including in Irkutsk, a region in Siberia located over 4,500 kilometers from Moscow. This marked the first Ukrainian drone presence in that area, though local officials said it did not pose a threat to civilians.
Additional drone incidents were reported in Russia’s Ryazan and Murmansk regions. No injuries were reported in those areas.
Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed control over the village of Oleksiivka in Ukraine’s Sumy region. Due to the ongoing offensive, Ukraine expanded mandatory evacuations in 11 more settlements in that region.
Ukraine’s military chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, stated that Russia currently concentrates its main attacks on the towns of Pokrovsk, Toretsk, and Lyman in Donetsk, as well as the border areas of Sumy.
The war between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, with both sides intensifying drone warfare and missile strikes deep into each other’s territories. Civilians remain at risk as both nations expand their military operations.
