Coffee slow aging: Lots of people enjoy coffee in the morning as a way to energize themselves for the day, but it may have additional benefits to promote long-term health. New research presented by the American Society for Nutrition recently reports that drinking caffeinated coffee may contribute to healthy aging and may prevent and promote chronic disease and well-being.
Researchers investigated data from 47,513 women, participants of the Nurses’ Health Study which has consistently monitored dietary and lifestyle information for about 40 years. Results suggested that women who frequently consume caffeinated coffee were more likely to show signs of successful aging without significant chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes or cancer, than women who did not consume coffee or consumed decaffeinated coffee, tea or sugar-sweetened soft drinks. This implies that caffeine may provide protective health benefits and associated longevity.
Additionally, based on these findings researchers hypothesized that bioactive compounds and antioxidants in coffee, may help promote longevity by:
High Antioxidant Capacity – COFFEE promotes healthy aging by countering the cellular damage caused by oxidative stress and inflammation – both of which affect aging and associated challenges;
Improved Cognitive Function — According to research, regular coffee drinking is associated with improved cognitive function for memory and mental acuity in older adults;
Improved Cardiovascular Health — Studies suggest that moderate coffee consumption may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Balances Metabolic Health — Coffee may also support blood sugar balance and therefore a reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Health experts recommend drinking one to three cups of coffee every day to get the health benefits of coffee without adverse results. Too much caffeine can lead to sleep interference or higher heart rate. Moderation is necessary.
