The Telangana government is considering increasing the retirement age of state government employees from 61 to 62 years. It is being reported that this proposal comes as the state faces a shortage of financial resources. According to reports, the government is holding discussions on how this decision may benefit both financially and politically.

Currently, around 9,000 employees retire every year, and the government needs to pay nearly ₹9,000 crore as retirement benefits. However, due to budget issues, even the current payments have become difficult. Around ₹8,000 crore is still pending from earlier retirements. If the retirement age is increased by one year, the government can delay this huge payment, giving temporary financial relief.

The finance department is reviewing the list of employees retiring this year and checking how much money will be needed. On average, 800 employees retire each month. By postponing retirement by a year, the government can avoid paying a large amount in one go.

This is not the first time such a step has been taken. Earlier, during the BRS government, the retirement age was increased from 58 to 61 years. That helped reduce the pressure on finances during that time.

Now, the Congress government is facing similar challenges. Since April 2024, about 12,000 employees have retired, and payments to many of them are still pending. Due to the need to fund welfare schemes and other development programs, the government is struggling to clear these dues.

However, increasing the retirement age may not be welcomed by all employees. Many are already unhappy because they are not receiving benefits like DA, PF, medical bills, and surrender leaves on time. The government is also concerned about how this move will be received politically. Will it reduce public support or give the government a boost?

The final decision is still pending. The government is carefully evaluating the impact of this proposal on the employees and the state’s financial health.
