Top 10 Most Difficult Languages to Learn Worldwide

Most Difficult Languages: Acquiring a new language is an exciting feat, but some languages are more difficult to learn than others. Things such as grammatical rules, script systems, tones, and pronunciation make them quite challenging, particularly for speakers of the English language. Here’s a glimpse of the top 10 most challenging languages to learn worldwide.

1. Mandarin Chinese
Mandarin is the leader with thousands of characters, four tones, and a grammatically complicated system to write.

Even a simple fluency in it takes years of practice and study.

2. Arabic
Arabic boasts many dialects, an unusual script that is written from right to left, and sounds unaccustomed to English ears. The grammar and root-based nature of its vocabulary contribute to the difficulty.

3. Japanese
Japanese has three writing systems—Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. With over thousands of Kanji symbols and complex layers of politeness, it’s a language that requires commitment.

4. Korean
While Hangul (the Korean script) is logical and can be learned, grammar structure, honorifics, and variations make Korean challenging for foreigners to master.

5. Hungarian
Hungarian grammar has 18 noun cases and vocabulary that is unrelated to most other European languages. This makes it especially hard for students to learn.

6. Russian
The Cyrillic alphabet, case-based grammar, and sophisticated pronunciation rules make Russian at the top of the list of difficult languages.

7. Icelandic
Icelandic hasn’t altered much since Viking Age times. It has old rules of grammar and strange letters, making it challenging even for native speakers of English.

8. Polish
Polish pronunciation is a nightmare because of its consonant clusters. Grammar rules and seven cases add to the complexity.

9. Finnish
Finnish is part of the Uralic language family and has very little in common with English. It has rich grammar and long compound words.

10. Vietnamese
Vietnamese is a tonal language and the northern dialect contains six tones. A single word can have many different meanings depending on how it is pronounced.
