Global Ambassador of Maldives: The Maldives has named Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif as its Global Brand Ambassador. The news was posted on Tuesday by the Maldives National Tourist Board’s official account. Visit Maldives posted on X, saying, “Visit Maldives Unveils Katrina Kaif as Global Brand Ambassador for the Sunny Side of Life.”

The Maldives National Tourist Board has taken a significant step in promoting tourism with this move. Three Maldivian deputy ministers made disparaging remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photos from the trip to Lakshadweep last year, sparking a spat between Male and New Delhi.

PM Modi has demanded that the Indian island group be promoted as a beach vacation destination and that domestic travel be encouraged. New Delhi summoned the Maldivian envoy and registered a strong protest against the viral posts after the issue escalated into a significant diplomatic dispute.

The government suspended the three deputy ministers and placed them on paid leave, where they remain. Soon after, the Maldives Tourism Ministry reported a 33% drop in Indian tourist arrivals compared to the previous year. Despite the tensions, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu took a conciliatory approach following the diplomatic dispute with India. He requested debt relief from New Delhi and emphasized that India would always remain the nation’s “closest ally.”
