Employee Quits: A viral WhatsApp chat has put employee rights and bad work culture in the limelight. The chat described how a new worker with a broken leg was bullied by his manager into reporting to duty. Rather than having sympathy, the manager simply instructed him to sit on a chair. Enraged over the absence of empathy, the worker resigned and is eliciting angry outrage.
The workers, only two weeks on the job, let the manager know of his bicycle accident and his need for total rest. The manager, rather than considering the seriousness of the case, told him to report back to work, saying, “I can get you a chair.” The employee, an accommodating one, added that he would come back to work when his doctor approved. But the manager continued to pester him, even guilt-tripping him into going on leave right after being hired. The worker finally quit, saying, “Then let me make it even easier for you. I quit.”
Popular chit-chat was one that elicited global indignation because everybody had the same testimonial of being forced to report to work while sick or injured. Social media users denounced the manager’s callousness and clamored for stricter laws in the workplace. Most of the workers recalled some instances when they were not granted medical leave or were forced to resume work before recovery. This is why labor laws must undergo severe reforms, they say.

The case shows the need for empathy in the workplace and also for understanding employee rights. The superior needs to learn the value of well-being and health above a need to produce. Organizations and governments have to make stricter labor laws that ensure employee treatment during medical emergencies is fair and not taken advantage of.
The viral resignation letter was a wake-up call for organizations to rethink their strategy for employees. A positive work environment nurtures loyalty, productivity, and long-term growth. Amidst the raging controversy on poisonous work culture, companies should value ethical and empathetic policies to advance employee well-being.
