Thug Life OTT:
Kamal Haasan and director Mani Ratnam’s latest film Thug Life, which hit theatres on June 5, 2025, was initially expected to stream on Netflix after an eight-week theatrical run. However, new reports suggest that the film may now be released on OTT platforms within just four weeks.
The reason for this early release is believed to be the film’s underwhelming performance at the box office. Despite having a strong cast that includes Silambarasan TR (Simbu) and high expectations, the film reportedly failed to attract a large audience and received mixed to poor reviews from critics.
Trustable reports indicates that Netflix might fast-track the streaming release to recover some of the losses digitally. Earlier, Kamal Haasan had described the eight-week window as a smart move to build box office earnings. But with lower-than-expected collections, producers might be rethinking their strategy. However, there is still no official confirmation from the film’s team or the OTT platform.
Thug Life is a gangster action drama revolving around Sakthivel, a powerful mafia leader played by Kamal Haasan, who adopts a boy named Amaran (Simbu) after a shootout. The film explores themes of power, betrayal, and violence.
Despite its grand visuals, music by AR Rahman, and direction by Mani Ratnam, Thug Life didn’t strike a chord with many viewers. Critics mentioned that the second half was confusing, with weak villains and unnecessary scenes. Even AR Rahman’s background score was seen as disappointing.
Now, with talks of an early OTT release, fans are eagerly waiting for official updates. The film may reach Netflix in less than a month, offering viewers a chance to catch it from home.
