France to Ban Social Media for Children under 15

Social Media Ban on Children: The government is ready to reduce the impact of social media on children. In particular, the French government has announced that it will soon take a decision to restrict children under the age of 15 from using social media. This was directly revealed by the country’s President Emmanuel Macron. He said that if the European Union does not take such measures, he will take steps to restrict children’s access to social media in the next few months. Macron took this decision especially after the incident of a 14-year-old student stabbing a staff member who was checking his bag caused a huge uproar.

Social Media Ban on Children in France

The country’s President Emmanuel Macron has made a sensational proposal to completely ban social media for children under the age of 15 in France . He announced that if the European Union does not take action in this regard. France will independently implement this policy within a few months. Macron made this announcement after a recent tragic incident at a middle school in Nogent, eastern France, where staff tried to check the bag of a 14-year-old student. This is a student who didn’t like it at all. He stabbed a 31-year-old school staff member to death.

However, although investigators have not yet concluded whether the boy who attacked with a knife was influenced by online content, Macron expressed his opinion that social media is the reason for the increase in violent behavior among young people. He said that the constant and unsupervised use of social media platforms by children is increasing the tendency to commit violence. Macron’s statement gained significance at a time when many countries are expressing concern about the impact of social media on children and teenagers . Especially after his interview, Macron also called for tech companies to increase their responsibility on the social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).

Is France following in Australia’s footsteps?

Last year, Australia banned social media for children under 16. The decision came after intense debate across the country. Australia has implemented the ban for at least 12 months. It has also imposed fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars (about 32.5 million US dollars) on tech companies that fail to comply with the order. The Australian ban applies to platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X. France is expected to follow suit.
